MAJIK J Kingsland Dubs 12"
(NRK Sound Division)
VNRK077
Magik Johnson debuts a solo single on NRK after last year’s much championed Piha collaboration with Ian Pooley on Honchos Music. Kingsland Dubs comprises of two mixes of The Funk; a solid dance floor groover with tasty disco licks, rolling congos and a heavy funk bass line with some nice electro touches added to the Electric Mix, and Rollergirl, a deep and vibesy house cut with more bounce to the ounce! Magik Johnson has had a blinding past 6 months, with remixes of amillionsons (London Ffrr), Human League (Virgin) and Q-Burns Abstract Message (NRK) Headless Chickens (Flying Nun) scoring big radio play and media attention. On his days off he can be found either directing traffic in his new home Kingsland or out on his lawn mowing rounds drinking tea and trimming the edges… for those casual drivers/gardeners we suggest taking any other route…. Highly recommended!MANIJAMA No no no 12"

HARRISON CRUMP I Need Your Love 12"
(PIAS)
VPIASX026T
Harrison Crump has made his name providing vocals for the likes of Felix Da Housecat and Eric Morillo. This uplifting house track, produced by Felix, has an electronic twist that sets it apart from the rest of the pack. It's all in his clever use of sounds, with the beats laid over quirky little lines and electro embellishments that are distinctly Housecat. This is a catchy feel-good tune in a style that suits Harrison's soulful yet unique vocal. The effect is like drinking a few margaritas on the beach. It's chilled, but with an added kick that leaves a warm afterglow.

(Honchos Music)
VHONM025
Studio Nova is one of the many monikers for Chicago producer, Mazi Namvar. Also known as Audio Soul Project, Mazi has recorded for a variety of labels, including NRK and Brique Rouge. Open Ended is a low down dirty house affair, with a menacing, rumbling 303 bass line. Aubergine, on the flip, is a cheeky little boompety - boomp number, with chopsy keys and some tight percussion. Mazi has had a blinding past 12 months, including the Community Remixed project on NRK (you got that yet?).

VSUSHI040

The Brazilian diva Ive Mendes provides the vocals for Like The Sun with her sweet husky tones coming to the fore, while Tam Tam goes Surdo deep with a percussive workout for a sweaty bottom heavy feel. On the B side DiSisco saddle up with a four on the floor sizzling nine minute groove to keep the dance floor hungry........

SANDY RIVERA FEAT HAZE Changes 12"
(Defected)
VDFTD059
The King of Tomorrow, Sandy returns with an uplifting deep, soul filled release complete with bonus track, I Can’t Stop. Rivera’s Changes is a funky, happy production, with elements of jazz, disco, soul and tech house. The Original Mix happily trucks along with a big bass line, filtered keys and a deep, soulful male vocal (by Haze) - quite infectious. The Sandy Rivera San Haze Remix is perhaps more interesting with a funky sub-bass and crisp percussion; the keys are more prominent on a jazz tip.SANDY RIVERA FEAT HAZE Changes Pt 2 12"

TASK FORCE Fugs R Us 12"
(Low Life Records)
VLOW22
Fugs R Us (Is it real?) is a stonker of a horn stab driven rowdy track complete with muted gunshots. Lyrics depict the vocalists placing themselves in the roles of Thugs, both proving that they are well capable of serving up the hardest images whilst at the same time having their tongues firmly in their cheeks, which can't be easy to do! Taking his place between the brothers McBain is the current rising star Don Iguana, who on loan from Receptor records does his best to come off as the top MC on the track. Production on this one is from Bury affiliate Mic Skilla, who has provided beats for Task Force before and also less auspiciously produced for the purple haired Iceberg Slimm. Here, we aren't let down. What cha lookin' At? Tears On My Pillowcase is a much more somber affair. Over a more downtempo feeling melancholy piano loop and haunting long drawn strings first Farma G then Chester P expand on their depressive observations of life whilst intermingling them with occasional dreamy gilmpses of what is possible if only you grasp the nettle by the thorns. To close out Tears On My Pillowcase features some choice cuts from 2002's DJ of the moment - DJ Skully. There's an instrumental and accapella of this as well and dirty, radio and instrumental versions of Fugs R Us. Overall then, this 12" shows you the two sides to Task Force, rowdy, angry and loud, but also, deep, meaningful, thoughtful and introspective. Nice to see them both, and to see Task Force drop on us a record which is high quality throughout.
