BRIAN SETZER Nitro Burnin’ Funny Daddy CD
(Collision)
File Under: Brian Setzer
COLN020
Brian Setzer helped revive rockabilly as leader of the Stray Cats in the '80s and helped revive jump-blues swing as leader of the Brian Setzer Orchestra in the '90s. Now he's trying to do the same for another vintage style of music -- garage rock -- on his new album, Nitro Burnin' Funny Daddy. Fronting a power trio that consists of bassist Johnny Hatton and drummer Bernie Driesel, Setzer attacks the material as fast, hard and noisily as he can. He's had too long and too successful a career to pass for an inspired amateur playing in an emptied-out garage, but he does allow the amplifiers to distort and he did emphasise energy over precision in picking the takes. The best thing about the project is Setzer's song writing. Despite the album's title and cover photo (Setzer leaning on a flame-painted hot rod), there are no real car songs on the disc. Instead, the best songs address growing old. Whether he's declaring that we only get Sixty Years on this planet or that he's getting worn down by the Ring, Ring, Ring of the phone and the "gone, gone, gone" of his money, he neither denies the obvious nor submits to the inevitable, but rather uses the hook-laden, beat-fueled choruses to demonstrate that he intends to make the most of the time he has left. This new album is Brian's most personal release to date. The trio hits us with explosive performances containing street corner doo-wop, heartbreak ballardry, and his love of the blues. Nitro Burnin' Funny Daddy proves to be a fine album from a veteran rocker on form.CALEXICO Alone Again Or CDEP

RITALIN Stop Wasting Time CD
(Rebel High Records)
File Under: Ritalin / Punk Rock / NZ Music
RHR002
Starting around late 1997, Ritalin could be found playing their own type of punk-rock. Since then Ritalin have played parties and organised their own gigs by hiring halls, et cetera, but once the boys reached puberty and were allowed to start playing in bars they finally started to get somewhere. Since 2001 Ritalin have played with all the touring NZ punk bands to come through their home town of Dunedin, being given recognition by some. This nine track CD shows off the latest recordings by these southern nomads who are on the road to pop-punk infamy.

BELLE & SEBASTIAN Step Into My Office Baby CDEP
(Spunk)
File Under: B&S / Rock / Spunk
URA116
Belle & Sebastian release their first-ever single to be taken from an album, Step Into My Office, Baby. Step Into My Office, Baby is a suitably bizarre and beguiling addition to the B&S canon, being something of a paean to West Coast harmonies and structure, by way of a lost script for ‘Confessions Of A Male Secretary’. As with previous Top 20 single Legal Man, songwriter Stevie Jackson seems concerned with taking the language and jargon of a world outside his experience and fetishising it for our amusement. Everybody knows that the office is a hotbed of sexual tension but how many people would write a song about it? Well, now we can be thankful for the writing of a really good one on the subject. The single, includes two brand new exclusive (and non-Trevor Horn produced) B-sides – Love On The March and Desperation Made A Fool Of Me. The CD also features the hilarious video for Step Into My Office, Baby It’s catchy, fun and almost throwaway, perfect pop in other words!

MACHINE TRANSLATIONS Love On The Vine CDEP
(Spunk)
File Under: Machine Translations / Spunkrock
URA108
The enigmatic Machine Translations re-emerge with their latest offering since their delectable Happy album. Love On The Vine more a transitional piece, with four new pieces and several reworkings /remixes along for the ride. The greater layerings as witnessed in live performances over this year have paid off nicely in this recording, with a broader brush-strokes of musical texture enriching the at times sparse soundscapes that typified some of J Walker's previous works. Features 4 new songs including a stomping sing-a-long title track with indian percussion and chinese orchestra, a collaboration with internationally acclaimed Icelandic producer Valgeir Sigurdsson (Bjork, Sigur Ros), 2 remixes by Melbourne sound artists Qua and Old Des Peres, and a quasi-live reworking of the song No Hip.
THE HIGH LLAMAS Beet, Maize & Corn CD
(Spunk / Duophonic)
File Under: The High Llamas / Spunk
URA115
With Beet, Maize & Corn, The High Llamas prove that tunes that take you to both a personal mood and a societal setting are hard to create but more rewarding when done carefully. Although "careful" often carries an ugly connotation when applied to musicians, Sean O’Hagan, his band of Llamas, three more brass players, and four string specialists have taken full care to present an exquisite album of soft songs with substance on the lyrical end that brings you to a decades-old house few artists have the guts or skill to enter. Beet, Maize & Corn is a pleasant album of calm, beautiful pop with a touch of class that’s rare. The serenity projected by this album is not without effort. Tension through the tracks is minimal, but none of the songs meander or continue ad nauseam. There is a purpose to every note on Beet, Maize & Corn. The High Llamas use pianos, banjos, violas, cellos, and trombones, to name just a few of their varied instruments, in a complementary manner that yields organic, sweet ear-candy. The cavities are worth it.
TIM DELUXE The Little Ginger Club Kid CD/2x12"
(Underwater)
File Under: Time Deluxe / Dance / House
H2O033CD/VH2O033LP
The Little Ginger Club Kid is inspired in the title, the artwork (which mixes Tim and his DJ mates with cute pictures from the Deluxe family archives), and most importantly, in the tunes, that swing you round and round in a blur of brilliance. With the help of a few select cronies, Deluxe has produced something of genuine originality. Whether in the opening stand up confrontation of Heavy Weather; the smiling slinking, surging single Less Talk More Action; the non-stop irresistible party of It Just Won't Do; the soul joy of Story Of You And Me; or the chilled farewell of Choose Something Like A Star, this is one of those albums that barely puts a foot wrong.
ROLANDO Nite:Life 016 CD
(NRK)
File Under: Rolando / Techno / NRK / Nite:Life / Dance
NRKMX016
The nite:life mix series takes the long route to the Motor City of Detroit, a city that has innovated so much great electronic music over the years. Nite:Life 016 lands in the hands of Rolando, a DJ and producer who has made his mark over the last few years with some groundbreaking records and awesome DJ sets. With his Los Hermanos label still in its infancy yet with the stunning Quetzal, Birth Of 3000 and Tres under its belt, his genre bending Knights Of The Jaguar project for Underground Resistance and a relentless DJ schedule, Rolando delivers a fine mix reflective of his influences of electro, deep house and all areas in between. With tracks by Gene Farris, Nick Holder, Joey Beltram, Model 500 and plenty more. Brilliant!
KENNY HAWKES Nite:Life 017 CD/2x12"
(NRK)
File Under: Kenny Hawkes / NRK / Nite:Life / Dance / House
NRKMX017/VNRKMXV017
The groove is definitely in the house when Mr Kenny Hawkes steps up to the decks and lets rip his booty-shaking collection of all things house. Having become such a prolific international DJ and producer on the dance music scene, it seems somewhat essential that NRK pass the Nite:Life gauntlet to Kenny for numero 017. The history speaks for itself: the seminal pirate radio show Girls FM with Luke Solomon, London's seven year Space club (which speaks volumes in itself) and a dedication to all things that became commonly known as Deep House. Nite:Life 017 serves up a reminder that Kenny can stray and blend any house style he cares too. The mix wanders seamlessly from an achingly cool hiphouse remix from Brooks, the vocal stormer Mary Its Over, to dirty Detroit electronic from Octave One, deep house classics and into minimal electronic sonic warps. Just like his very own productions (Play the Game), expect heavy weight basslines throughout. Well cool!

No Soma compilation would be complete without a good dose of quality techno, and who better to represent this than Bryan Zentz and his debut Faculty X Perils Of Second Sight release on Soma. The X-Factor concludes the album in fine style with Soma’s finest electric exponent Percy X delivering the emotional On A Day (Remake).
