YEAH YEAH YEAHS EP CDEP
(Shifty
/Spunk)
File Under: Rock
URA077
"The Yeah Yeah Yeahs have a leg up on their peers thanks to singer Karen O - a giggling goofball and punk-rock sex kitten all wrapped into one." Rolling Stone Magazine
"They're so heedlessly tough that the arty touches at the end of Miles Away can seem like a relief, a promise that the music is an effect, not reality.I can't believe people in New York aren't singing this on the street." – Greil Marcus
"Done with spunk, funk, and downtown noise." - Robert Christgau, Village Voice
"Karen O channels the bad-ass heart of rock and roll, luring the audience in with a kind of lurid pillow talk." - The New Yorker
"Yeah Yeah Yeahs are the embodiment of the spirited energy that has transformed New York City's rock underground." - Interview Magazine
Yeah Yeah Yeahs are vocalist Karen O, guitarist Nick Zinner, and drummer Brian Chase. Hailing from Brooklyn, New York, this three-piece rock outfit has been making waves in the New York scene, and the word is spreading. By taking bits and pieces of the rock and roll music they grew up with and twisting them into their own distinct shape, Yeah Yeah Yeahs have become the future of rock and roll, like a cold splash of water in the face of a sleeping giant.

THE LIBERTINES Up The Bracket CD
(Spunk / Rough Trade)
File Under: Rock / Strokes / Hives / Vines/ D4 / Datsuns
URA078
"What the blazes is going on? Coldplay release the dreariest load of flu-rock tosh since Elbow and half the globe buys it, whilst the Libertines remain glued to the toilet circuit despite being the funniest, most twisted London rock band since Campag." NME
The Libertines have been around since the Romans. Peter Doherty (guitarist/vocalist) was born on Hadrian's Wall, but Carlos Barât (guitarist/vocalist) wasn't. After a couple of confusing millennia, they ended up in London - and that's where our story really begins. The Libertines, for those who don't know yet, make music, art, poetry, love, war and airfix models. Primarily, though, they're known for their music - which is brilliant. They're a beautiful and wildly compressed version of all the great British groups of all time (ie The Clash, The Jam, The Smiths, The Yardbirds, The Kinks, The Small Faces and Chas & Dave). Just recently, they completed their debut album Up The Bracket (recorded live at RAK studios with Mick Jones, formerly of The Clash). As debut albums go, it's total genius. And that's underselling it. It's the ringing crash of breaking hearts and tender arguments. It's short, sharp and flecked with blood. And, in global terms, everyone will own a copy by the year 2026.

THE HISS EXPLOSION 66 CD
(Arclife)
File Under: Arclife / NZ Music
ARC02
1
Hiss Explosion is group featuring Mike Brasell (Squim, MJ Hex) and Peter Mitchell (Squim, Renderers) and this their second album was recorded at Arcaudio studios late 2001 and mastered August of this year with some geust appearances from old Squirm bandmate Brett Lupton and Thom Bell contributing some bass in between engineering stints. Eleven songs feature on the album, one being a old David Kilgour song What you Should Be Now from his Great Unwashed days. An album of sonic explosions and a few pop songs to boot. Its an album that will appeal to fans of the "Flying Nun/Dunedin" sound of days gone by. Recommended.

THE BLACK HEART PROCESSION Amore Del Tropico CD
(Spunk / Touch & Go)
File Under: Black Heart Procession
URA073
The Black Heart Procession live in a trailer park in San Diego, CA with their dog Diesel and their BMX bikes, and drink tecate in a can. The Black Heart Procession consists of two main songwriters, Tobias Nathaniel and Pall A. Jenkins, who were both in Three Mile Pilot. At times they play as a simple two piece, and at others they ask friends to join them. With their fourth album Amore Del Tropico is basically, a concept album about a murder in a small town (the Tropics of Love?) and the grizzled detective who comes to investigate. While this shares some similarities with their other records (for instance, I'm pretty sure 2 is about a loved one dying, and I know that Three is about going off to war and getting yourself killed), there are a lot of differences. For instance, they've all but abandoned their insanely-catchy-yet-crushing dirges, opting instead for a wide variety of sounds, from mariachi to bossa nova pop to alt-country-ish ballad to slowcore to dub-flavoured ballad-pop back to their traditional sound. Also abandoned is the numerical constancy; this one's got an actual title (although on the back of the CD tray "4" is written in red). Also abandoned is the scary horse-man playing trumpet. What was that all about, anyway?

DERRICK L CARTER Squaredancing in a Roundhouse CD/2x12"
(Classic Music Company)
File Under: Derrick Carter / Classic / Dance / house
CMCCD106/VCMCLP106
"For those looking for the future of House, it's here, and once again it's from Chicago" - Terry Farley, Muzik Mag
Chicago house producer / DJ legend Derrick L. Carter releases his debut artist album for the label he co-owns, Classic Recordings, putting an end to the five year long wait for fans. The 15-track opus, Squaredancing In A Roundhouse, features entirely fresh material, alongside new versions of recent releases, all of which are available on CD for the first time. The double LP format features extended dancefloor friendly versions of album tracks, alongside two exclusives not included on the CD. The album is a much-needed antidote to the current state of dance music. In classic Derrick style, it's soothing, touching, funky, original and boompty; all the things that make this man one of a kind. The album perfectly encapsulates everything that DC is about - from the awe-inspiring, old school Chicago anthems If I... and A Hope, through the sassy, 1920's inspired Do You Believe and the title track, to the new-wave jackin' grooves of Where U At? and Rhythm Machine. The album also showcases Derrick's immense musical talent through the melodic, ethereal styles of All Dreams Collide and While Corey Slept, to the tongue-in-cheek nitrous rush of Friends. The sheer musical diversity looks set to mark this album out as a benchmark in the history of House music. Alongside Luke Solomon, it is Derrick's musical and conceptual input that has resulted in Classic Recordings becoming one of the leaders in the world of house. Derrick's standing allows him to A R and sign some of the most groundbreaking, original tracks and artists - from Matthew Herbert and DJ Sneak to Tiefschwarz and Isolée. Derrick's unique and innovative DJ style has attracted a loyal fan base in every corner of the world. He is seen by many as an Ambassador for the new generation of Chicago house, following in the legendary footsteps of Frankie Knuckles, Marshall Jefferson and Ron Hardy. Derrick has found a home away from home in Europe, especially in Britain where he's become a major celebrity among dance-music aficionados - the DJ's favourite DJ and the discerning House lovers DJ of choice.

METRO AREA Metro Area CD/2x12"
(Environ)
File Under: Metro Area / House / Dance
ENVCD002/VENVLP002
"this is the sound of disco resurrected" Muzik - 4/5
"space sex disco funk for a new generation" Jockey Slut - 8/10
"their spacial spinal scratch is so sophisticated it hurts. Metro Area are a total class act teaching dance music a lesson" Sleaze Nation
Morgan Geist and Darshan Jesrani's Metro Area releases have consistently had house and techno-soul trainspotters hot under the collar over the last couple of years...... Environ have now slapped together an 11 track overview for the home listener and "It's a certifiable winner" (Muzik mag). After over a year of late-night sessions in New Jersey and Manhattan, Metro Area burst onto the scene in 1999 with their self-titled debut 12" featuring the cult smash Atmosphrique. The brainchild of veteran producers Morgan Geist and Darshan Jesrani, Metro Area was born out of the duo's dichotomous love of both the old moods of R&B, disco and boogie and the more cutting-edge sound of innovative house and techno. Metro Area brings back the soulful experimentation of early club classics, mixing live and electronic instruments. Simultaneously, the mood and minimalism of more recent dance music forms creep into the mix: Detroit's cold futurism, Chicago's abstract track-modes, and the warmth of New York and New Jersey's deep house. They've already dropped a collection of classics like The Art of Hot, Caught Up and Miura.

RICHARD BUCKNER Impasse CD
(Overcoat Recordings / Spunk!)
File Under: Richard Buckner
URA074
Richard Buckner latest album was recorded at his home studio with no other musicians, save for his wife on drums, I expected a painfully raw, minimalist piece of work. After all, this is the same Richard Buckner who took MCA's major label bucks and made two of the most wilfully deconstructed and personal albums of the '90s (1996's Devotion and Doubt and 1998's Since). Those albums twisted simple chord progressions and traditional song writing styles into almost wholly unrecognisable shapes, often to brilliant effect. Not surprisingly, Buckner's relationship with MCA lasted for only those two albums. Now that he's been left to his own devices (on the tiny Chicago-based indie, Overcoat), it stands to reason that he would come up with something even more radical, even more exploratory. But Impasse, the new album in question, is not some guttural primal scream committed to tape. In fact, it's probably Buckner's most accessible release thus far. And, in a happy coincidence, it's also probably his best. Impasse is a powerful, wrenching work, both impeccably crafted and passionately felt. The most surprising aspect of the album is Buckner's reliance on synthesisers. The songwriter's wooly vocals pitted against symphonic keyboard swirls sounds like an odd move at first, but it's an almost wholly successful one. Though Impasse may not have had the budget of Buckner's major label offerings, it's his richest, most sonically varied recording. Case in point, the stunning (A Year Ahead)…& A Light, which kicks off with a galloping beat and a gorgeous twin-guitar hook and segues seamlessly into a soothing acoustic slide guitar and synth middle section, only to burst into a high-speed finale. Not a moment is wasted on Impasse: each song is focused and economical, and each song consistently rewards repeated listening. As usual, Buckner's lyrics are uniformly excellent. With the precision of a short story writer and the tortured soul of a poet, he conveys heartache and loss like few can. Impasse sees Buckner taking a slightly more impressionistic approach to lyrics, but, as a whole, they make up what feels like an ebbing and flowing narrative. It's no mistake that the lyrics are printed in the album's booklet as a whole piece, unbroken by song titles. Recommended.

FELIX DA HOUSECAT Metropolis Present Day? Thee Album CD
(Radikal Fear / PIAS)
File Under: Felix Da Housecat
PIASB005CD
Metropolis captures Felix whilst he was at the forefront of Chicago’s underground house scene. The album is a timeless classic, combining his famed "Wild Pitch" sound with the deep techno & jacking house that was emanating from the Windy City at the time. It was first released on Felix’s own label Radikal Fear in 1995 and includes Thee Dawn - an early 90’s classic that was released on Guerilla Records and also features an added bonus track Submarine (Full String and Splash Mix) which was not included on the original. Felix Stallings Jr produced his first single Phantasy Girl in 1987 with a little help from DJ Pierre. By 1992 he had a hit with the single Thee Dawn on Guerilla Records. His popularity soared in Europe and the following year’s By Dawn’s Early Light and Thee Industry Made Me Do It cemented his reputation. Soon after he formed Radikal Fear Records, which became one of the premier Chicago labels in the 1990’s. During 1995 he released his debut Felix Da Housecat album Metropolis Present Day on Radikal Fear and maintained the momentum with six releases over the following three years. In 2001 Felix released the now legendary Kittenz and Thee Glitz (CITYROCK4CD) album and has also been responsible for a stunning array of remixes.

VARIOUS This Is Hardcore CD/2x12"
(God Made Me Hardcore)
File Under: Electroclash
GMMH2304CD/VGMMH2304
"a lifeline for the idiosyncratic British pop song. Hurrah!" NME
"electronic torch bearers" Update
"the haute couture crew have taken to it like Bob Marley to a spliff" Mixmag
"a masterpiece of senseless exuberance" The Guardian
"who says synthcore birds are boring?" Mixmag
"Make sure you get a copy of your own" DJ
After all the Fischerspooner/electroclash hype from New York and Berlin, it’s time for Britain to strike back in the shape of God Made Me Hardcore, the UK’s leading electro pop label. The success and notoriety of the Droyds Girls On Pills (VGMMH2301) and Moon Unit’s Whip It (VGMMH2302) has lead to the label being talked about, played out and even imitated - Dazed and Confused magazine are about to launch a major ad campaign entitled ‘Dazed Made Me Hardcore’. The label’s first compilation is the finest UK electropop album available, showcasing 15 tracks from The Droyds, Riviera, Siobhan Fahey, Moon Unit, Sensyon and more. It’s already sound tracked catwalk shows for Chanel in Paris and Fake London over in the UK. This Is Hardcore - the sound of tomorrow, today. Includes The Droyds cover of The Charlatans North Country Boy, which The Charlatans use as their live intro tape! Available for the first time on this CD. Excellent!

IAN POOLEY & MAJIK J Piha CDS
(Honchos Music)
HONM019CD
Fresh from the runaway success of his IP Series on NRK (NRK066CD - The Fly Shuffle, Missing You, Quattro etc) Ian Pooley teamed up with Majik J (aka Dick Johnson) at a secluded studio near the world famous (damn please don’t show this to our Paeroa customer!!!) Piha beach on North Island, New Zealand – yep, where we live…. This track is a straight up groover with tough, percussive beats and a lush disco-loop… perfect summer dance floor fodder and already HUGE in the truest sense of the word on NZ’s more discerning dance floors and radios, in Ibiza and claiming small children up and down the land. DJ Sneak and Jamie Anderson provide the remixes. Like the beach the vinyl is black and is very hot on the feet in the summer sun, treat with care and have sun block on hand!

THE NOTWIST Neon Golden CD
(Spunk / Big Store)
File Under: Rock / Spunk
URA066
The Notwist have finished their long awaited fifth album Neon Golden, and it's a big step further towards what they've been aiming towards for years: seamlessly unifying guitar driven music with modern electronica. Brimming with self confidence, they effortlessly move between both styles and ultimately make it something all their own. Proof of this are the euphoric reactions in their home country (Germany, where their popularity has grown with each of their releases) as well as astonished "this is great, who are these guys!?" comments from foreign countries. Now, after years of honing their craft, the Notwist are finally being seen for what they are: an unusual and breath taking band that sets high standards for themselves and their music… Neon Golden seamlessly blends Markus Acher's subtle guitar and plaintive, detached vocals with modern day electronica (courtesy of squiggle-rock maestro Martin Gretschmann, aka Console) and ultra-fat dub passages and lush string & horn arrangements by classically trained trumpeter and bassist Micha Acher The whole stew is anchored by Mecki Messerschmid's tasteful and colourful drum work, both on the skins as well as the pads. Perhaps the most impressive thing about the record is the band's attention to tiny details and the way they mix the organic and electronic with extraordinary ease. The way they weave together cello and woodwinds with elecrtonic scratches and buzzes on the opener One Step Inside Doesn't Mean You Understand or the way the front porch banjo and warm, woodwind-fueled chorus meshes with the minimal electro snaps, crackles, and pops of the first 12' (only) release, Trashing Days seems indeed perfectly natural. On a broader scale and no less impressive is the way the songs themselves differ wildly in instrumentation and arrangement but all fit together so naturally as a whole. The driving 4/4, euphoric, uptempo pop romp of the lead (hit!) single Pilot and the super fat, dub inspired, This Room beautifully complements the 30's movie soundtrack strings and haunting woodwinds of Solitaire or the delicate piano and aching vulnerability of Markus Acher's vocal on the album's
closer Consequences. It's been a long time since anyone made a record of such deep soul and smarts and it is a direct result of years of hard work developing a craft and sticking to principles while others opt to take the fast track and subsequently burn out. Neon Golden is the sound of a group of artists comfortably and confidently hitting their stride and it harks back to the days when an entire album actually meant something. In 2002, this aesthetic is sorely missed. A stunning album!

DESAPARECIDOS Read Music, Speak Spanish CD
(Spunk / Saddle Creek)
File Under: Bright Eyes / Spunk
URA068
Desaparecidos is a 5-piece rock band fronted by Bright Eyes (URA067) singer/songwriter Conor Oberst (vocals, guitar) and featuring Denver Dalley (guitar), Casey Scott (bass), Ian McElroy (keyboards), and Matt Baum (drums). Oberst may be better known for his confessional songwriting and storytelling, but Desaparecidos is nothing of the sort. Indeed, similar vocal melodies and song structure are present, but the guitars are loud and distorted, the bass is pounding, and the drums and keyboards round out this hi-energy, pop-rock band without the lyrical focus of personal relationships. Oberst screams out observational commentary about urban development, the sacrifice of human value for the dollar bill, and the new American Dream. Setting out to capture the rawness of the band, the record was recorded over one week at Presto! Recording Studio in Lincoln with producer Mike Mogis. Bright Eyes fans will love it, but it'll also appeal to anyone who's ever dug At The Drive In, The Pixies, Weezer, Dinosaur Jr., etc.

JEHST Return Of The Drifter CD
(Lowlife)
File Under: Jehst / lowlife / hip hop
LOW19CD
"When I bought this, I’d never heard of Jehst but at the record shop (Fat City - Manchester) I was told I had to get it. So, duly I placed it onto the turntable and donned the headphones. I must have listened to about 3/4 of it before the next record went on, not because I wasn't sure whether or not to buy it but because I didn't want to stop." UK Review
Jehst has been up in this thing for a very long time. Starting as a writer, this Northerner has progressed to incorporate MC’ing and production into his arsenal. After hooking up with Evil Ed he helped to form the YNR Collective and associated label he subsequently dropped his Premonitions EP as the labels first release. The depth of the lyrics belied his young age and established his as someone to not mess with. Jehst has continued to increase his presence performing alongside Braintax on the Travel Show tour and has had guest appearances on Task Force, Braintax and Universal Soldiers records as well as becoming an integral member of the Champions of Nature group alongside MCs like Lewis Parker, Supa T, Profound, Apollo and AM etc. Now he is back, and stepping up his game as one of the talented stable of artists at Low Life Records. His first EP for them, the High Plains Drifter contains some cuts which are bound to become classics and sees Jehst cover a variety of styles and topics, from dark underground tales of woe to head nodding club bangers. Towards the end of 2002 Jehst returned to Low Life to Drop his heavy Return Of The Drifter 12" which is backed with Under The Weather featuring Asaviour. The 12" is also joined by this CD which features all of Jehst's previous Low Life releases as well as the Alcoholic Author track and some live footage. A substantial 11 track release that should not be missed.

IVE MENDES Ive Mendes CD
(Mr Bongo Recordings)
File Under: Latin music / Mr Bongo
MRBCD25
Sex, spirituality and a South American Sade-sound. Along with Gisele, Ive Mendes is the latest reason to forgive Brazil for winning the World Cup. An olive skinned, erotically framed beauty, Ive is Brighton label Mr Bongo’s sweetest songstress, whose softly haunting, husky notes fill portentous evenings with promises of love. Accompanied by gentle Brazilian beats, seductive guitar strings and sultry percussion rhythms, Ive sings songs mostly composed herself, in a mix of English and Portuguese, evoking hot evenings running warm fingers over tanned bodies in intimate outdoor encounters. While her music is inspired by her mother country, it isn’t a soundtrack only to be heard in specialist Brazilian clubs or Acid Jazz nights. Neither is it the sound of Carnival. It’s Nu-Brazil - the lilting influence of traditional music with the vocal inspiration of international artists - notably Sade and Bjork. It’s music to be appreciated in every bedroom, at every party and in every bar where people like to lose their heads and hearts to sensuality. As Ive says herself "I am Brazilian and I represent that. We are not just about Bossanova and Samba, it’s not just The Girl from Ipanema, we have our own music in our own style. And I am both sexual and spiritual too which is what you will hear in my music and see from my performances". With award winning producer Robin Millar (with his productions of Sade, Everything But the Girl and Fine Young Cannibals has achieved sales of over 50 million to date) and Mr Bongo’s help she has produced her first album, writing all the songs on her self-titled debut album.

SOMACD030
The year 2002 has been another great one for Soma Records, following on from the critically acclaimed Soma 10 Anthology (SOMACD22), Percy X Where's The Music (SOMACD028) and Slam's Alien Radio Remixed (SOMACD029) albums. The time has come when the Soma crew select the pick of their new releases for the new Soma compilation. Now in it's eighth volume it's a series which just keeps giving, constantly getting better and highlighting the diversity and depth of the Soma roster of artists. As we released the mammoth Soma 10 compilation early this year there was unfortunately no compilation round up last year, therefore this is an edition that has been eagerly anticipated by fans of the label. On this collection new guys like Sobek, Master H and Tony Thomas line up next to Soma heavyweights Percy X, Funk D'Void and Slam. From across the Atlantic there are tracks from H-Foundation and Common Factor. One of the UK's premier electro funksters Keith Tenniswood pops up with a couple of remixes, firstly with Andrew Weatherall as Two Lone Swordsmen in the ALBUM EXCLUSIVE dub of Slam featuring Dot Allison's Visions and also turning in a solo Radioactive Man mix for Percy X's Time To Jack. Further remixes come from Silicone Soul with their Darkroom Dub of Universal Principles Latin Stroll, Envoy revamps his Sexdrive track into a turbo charged sex bomb, there's also Samuel L Sessions fizzing Juice rework of the mighty Diabla and finally the fantastic Christian Smith & John Selway remix of all-time Slam classic Stepback. The result is a compilation of the very best house, techno and electro that money can buy. Next year will see the release of artist albums from Master H, H-Foundation, Silicone Soul, Funk D'Void and Slam. The artwork for the compilation has been done in conjunction with a new initiative Soma has developed with Glasgow School of Art, from a collection of several different creative ideas one student has been selected to cultivate his idea of a Soma alphabet. The front cover shows characters that have been selected and a specially encrypted message, which only those with the code will be able to decipher. TRASH Companion 01 CD/2x12"
(End Recordings)
File Under: Electroclash / End Recordings
TREND001CD/VTREND001LP
London's premier alternative nightclub Trash has been fucking with heads, genre bending, spotlighting new talent and shining like a beacon every Monday night for over five years now. Together it's DJ's and weekly army of attendee's, characters and ace face's have shaped a soundtrack of weekday decadence, fun and excitement beyond the dormant format of franchise clubbing by numbers. By forging their own fashions, making their own music, supporting their own scene the Trash regulars have become the most exciting participants in an otherwise withering UK club scene. Trash maintains a separate uncompromised vision of its own style, its own passion and its own music. It is lauded as the standard bearer for what music, fashion and clubs should be, from almost every night-life, music and fashion commentator. From The Face to The Times, Muzik, Vogue, NME, Wallpaper, Time Out, The Guardian and everywhere in between, Trash is the name to check for clubbing remaining firmly an exotic, individual and thrilling experience. The reason for this is simple. Above all Trash is a club in the original sense, where belonging is about making the effort. Trash has championed and showcased some of music's most colourful and exciting new talent. Live bands and DJ's such as Soulwax, Stereo Total, The Rapture, Gold Chains, Gonzales, Peaches, Bobby Conn, Tiga, Felix Da Housecat and the LCD Soundsystem to name but a few have trodden the boards in some of their earliest, finest and most intimate shows/sets. This faultless talent for believing in the bands and sounds that matter is showcased on the record. Totally unmixed Trash Companion # 1 is made up of six brand new and exclusive live recordings from underground heroes Peaches, Stereo Total, Gonzales, Moldy Peaches, Gold Chains and The Yeah Yeah Yeahs - all of which were recorded live at Trash on their first UK gigs. Alongside these unique moments are six carefully selected Trash dance-floor classics, including some rare and long forgotten gems pulled from the vaults. The full length mix of Kylie Minogue's finest moment Confide In Me slides into Nancy Sintara's lost erotic classic Kinky Love. Duran Duran show what they could do when let off the leash with a NY No Wave style mash up of their track My Own Way, while a rare Tiga mix takes Felix Da Housecat's Madame Hollywood (here as Mister Hollywood) deeper into DiscoNotDisco territory. The Slits' seminal Marvin Gaye punk funk mess up I Heard It Through The Grapevine still rocks the floor, throwing us straight into Huggy Bear's seminal Riot Grrl call to arms Her Jazz. The album compiled by Erol Alkan, contains the definitive sounds that have made Trash one of the capitals leading nights and now its your chance to try it out at home.
